Permeable paving

What are permeable paving stones?

These are floor coverings designed to allow rainwater to seep through their surface to the underlying soil. They work thanks to spaces or porous materials that facilitate the passage of water.

How do they work?

Their operation is based on several principles: Spaces between the pavers: Many permeable paving systems are installed with wider-than-usual joints filled with porous materials such as gravel, specially graded sand, or fine aggregates. These spaces create direct infiltration pathways for water.

Porous materials: Some paving stones are made from porous materials such as specially formulated concrete with few or no fines (small aggregates), creating a network of interconnected voids through which water can percolate. Others may be made from recycled plastics with a honeycomb structure that promotes drainage.

Draining subbase system: The effectiveness of permeable pavers is greatly improved by the presence of a subbase made up of layers of aggregates of varying sizes. This subbase acts as a temporary reservoir for infiltrated water and allows for gradual infiltration into the natural soil.

Types of permeable paving stones.

There are several types of permeable paving stones, each designed with specific characteristics to facilitate water infiltration:

Porous concrete pavers: Made with a concrete mix containing few or no fines (small aggregates). This composition creates a network of interconnected voids through which water can flow directly.

Wide-joint pavers: These are classic pavers (often made of concrete or natural stone) laid with larger gaps between them. These joints are then filled with permeable materials such as gravel, specially graded sand, or small stones, allowing water to seep through these spaces.

Cellular pavers (or "reinforced grass"): These are structures made of recycled plastic or concrete with open cells. These cells can be filled with gravel for maximum drainage or with soil and vegetation (grass) to combine permeability and natural aesthetics.

Recycled plastic pavers: Made from recycled plastic, these pavers often have a structure designed to optimize drainage through and between the elements. They are lightweight and durable.

Bonded aggregate paving stones: Composed of small aggregates (gravel, pebbles) bound together by a permeable resin. The open structure allows water to infiltrate while providing a stable surface.

The choice of permeable paving type will depend on several factors such as the application (pedestrian walkway, parking lot, etc.), the volume of water to be managed, aesthetic constraints and budget.

How to install permeable paving stones?

Installing recycled plastic pavers can be an excellent option for permeable and durable driveways, patios, or parking areas. Here's a step-by-step guide so your readers can complete this installation themselves.

Installation Guide for Recycled Plastic Pavers
  • Prepare the base: Mark out the area, excavate (depth according to manufacturer), compact the soil. Add a geotextile membrane (recommended).

  • Drainage subbase: Spread and compact layers of aggregates (coarse then fine), respecting the levels and slopes.

  • Bedding layer (if necessary): Spread and level sand or fines (according to manufacturer), without compacting.

  • Laying the pavers: Interlock the Aquastorm pavers (or other brand) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check the alignment. Cut if necessary.

  • Grouting (if applicable): Fill the spaces with sand or specified material.

  • Light compaction (if recommended): Compact lightly with a vibrating plate and a protective mat (follow manufacturer's instructions).

  • Finishing touches: Install the edging and clean up.

Important: Always follow the specific instructions of the manufacturer of your recycled plastic paving stones.

Maintenance of permeable paving stones
  • Regular: Sweep (monthly), clean stains quickly, prevent the accumulation of soil/debris.

  • Periodic: Clean with pressurized water (gently), brush if necessary.

  • Joints: Inspect and refill regularly with the appropriate material, remove weeds.

  • Prevention: Avoid aggressive chemicals, corrosive de-icing salt, excessive loads.

Objective: To maintain cleanliness and permeability of the seals and prevent clogging for optimal functionality and a long service life. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations.

General Councils:
  • Always consult the manufacturer's instructions: Each type of permeable paving may have unique installation specifications. The manufacturer's instructions are your primary reference.

  • Plan carefully: Before starting, determine the area to be paved, the type of paving stones, the sub-base materials needed, and the drainage system (if applicable).

  • Prepare a solid and draining base: The key to successful permeable paving is a well-prepared sub-base with layers of aggregates of different sizes to ensure drainage.

  • Ensure adequate slopes: Provide a slight slope to allow water to flow towards the planned infiltration or drainage areas.

  • Use the right tools: Make sure you have all the necessary tools: shovel, rake, level, leveling rules, rubber mallet, vibrating plate (if necessary), etc.

  • Work in stages: Follow the steps of excavation, laying of the subbase, bedding layer (if necessary) and laying of the pavers methodically.

  • Maintain consistent joint spacing: Correct joint spacing is crucial for permeability. Use spacers if necessary.

  • Choose a permeable jointing material: Use permeable sand, crushed fines or a specific material recommended for jointing.

  • Compact properly (if necessary): If recommended by the manufacturer, lightly compact the paved surface with a vibrating plate compactor equipped with a protective mat. Excessive compaction can reduce permeability.

  • Pay attention to detail: Pay particular attention to edges, changes in level, and points of connection with other surfaces.

In conclusion, permeable pavers represent a sustainable and effective flooring solution for stormwater management. Their ability to infiltrate water directly into the ground offers numerous environmental benefits , such as reduced runoff, groundwater recharge, and improved water quality.

As an eco-friendly alternative to traditional impermeable surfaces, permeable pavements are playing an increasing role in promoting more responsible urban development and mitigating the negative impacts of soil sealing. Their continued adoption is essential for building more resilient and environmentally friendly cities here in Montreal, Quebec, and beyond.
