Autumn preparation: how to protect your lawn, garden and delicate plants for spectacular greening in spring

Autumn not only brings spectacular colours and fresh air; it also marks the beginning of the countdown to the first frosts and heavy winter snowfalls.

For many homeowners, the biggest worry at the end of the season is always the same: will my plants, shrubs and lawns survive the extreme cold to grow back healthy and strong in the spring?

The short answer is yes, provided they receive proper preparation before the ground freezes. A garden is a significant investment and the heart of any property's exterior. Here's a practical guide to the essential steps for conditioning your green spaces before winter and ensuring they awaken looking their best next spring.

1. Raking up fallen leaves: more than just a matter of aesthetics

Although a layer of dried leaves on the lawn may seem harmless, it becomes a serious problem during the winter. When snow falls on the accumulated leaves, it creates a damp, compacted layer that: - Suffocates the lawn by blocking sunlight and air circulation. - Traps excess moisture, promoting the growth of fungi and fungal diseases (such as snow mold). The key step: thoroughly clean the entire lawn of leaves and plant debris to ensure it can breathe properly before entering dormancy.

2. Lawn aeration: loosen the soil to allow it to breathe

Throughout the summer, repeated foot traffic, outdoor activities, and mowing compact the soil. Compacted soil prevents roots from receiving the oxygen, water, and nutrients they need to survive the winter. Fall aeration involves removing small plugs of soil throughout the lawn. This allows: - Roots to grow deeper and strengthen in the weeks leading up to the frost. - Water and fertilizers to penetrate directly into the root zone. - The soil to drain better during the spring thaw.

3. Autumn fertilization: food for the roots

Unlike spring fertilization (focused on rapid green leaf growth), autumn fertilization is specially formulated to stimulate root development. By applying the right nutrients before the first frosts: - Plants and lawns accumulate energy reserves to withstand the heat stress of winter. - As soon as temperatures rise in spring, the garden greens up much faster and with greater density.

4. Applying mulch: the natural coat for your plants

The roots of perennials, flowers, and young shrubs are particularly vulnerable to freeze-thaw cycles, which can crack the soil and force roots to the surface. Applying a protective layer of mulch or organic compost (5 to 10 cm) around the base of the plants acts as thermal insulation, which: - Maintains a stable soil temperature. - Retains necessary moisture. - Protects the root system from extreme cold.

5. Protecting delicate shrubs with burlap.

Icy winds, the weight of accumulated snow, and freezing rain can break branches and burn the foliage of your most delicate shrubs or conifers (such as cedars, rhododendrons, or hydrangeas). The ideal solution is protective wrapping with burlap: - It protects the plant's structure from breakage caused by the weight of the snow. - It acts as an effective barrier against the dry winter wind. - It allows the plant to breathe without accumulating excessive moisture inside.

Summary of the Fall Yard Cleanup

A complete garden preparation program before winter should include the following essential elements:

1. Complete collection of dead leaves and plant debris.

2. Professional aeration of the field.

3. Deep fertilization focused on root development.

4. Laying protective mulch in flower beds and borders.

5. Protection with burlap for vulnerable shrubs.

Preparing the exterior of your home before the first frost not only protects the value of your property, but also ensures that when the spring warmth returns, your green space will be ready to shine.
