Applications of specialized coatings (MarTex, Texnov, Adex)

A safer surface that’s easier to maintain, ready for Quebec’s seasons.

Specialized coatings are an effective solution to renovate, even out, and protect outdoor surfaces without rebuilding everything. In Montreal, freeze-thaw cycles, humidity, rain, and de-icing salts require the right products and—most importantly—flawless surface preparation.

At Lavé‑Uni Montréal, we mainly work with three product families depending on the substrate, intended use, and the result you’re looking for: MarTex, Texnov, and Adex.

What specialized coatings are used for

  • Modernize the look of existing concrete (steps, porches, landings, slabs)

  • Add a slip-resistant finish for safety

  • Protect the surface against water, wear, and certain stains

  • Even out a surface that has been repaired or patched

  • Extend the lifespan of an existing structure

Where are these coatings most often used in Montreal?

Steps, risers, and front porches

Main entrances are highly exposed to water, de-icing salt, and abrasion. A well-chosen coating provides a cleaner look, improved safety (slip resistance), and longer-lasting durability.

Walkways and pedestrian paths

In high-traffic areas, the goal is a uniform surface that’s easy to maintain and resistant to temperature swings.

Pool surrounds and wet areas

These zones require a finish with strong grip and moisture resistance, designed to handle frequent water exposure and reduce slipping risks.

Foundation walls

Coatings are often used to protect and refresh foundation walls, improve the appearance of exposed concrete, and add an extra layer of resistance against moisture and weathering.

Here, the priority is safety (slip resistance), comfort, and coating stability. Drainage and slopes must be verified before application.

Concrete slabs and landings

When the concrete is structurally sound, a specialized coating can be a great alternative to demolition—provided defects are corrected and proper adhesion is ensured.

MarTex, Texnov, and Adex: how to choose the right product

The right product depends on three factors:

  • the condition of the substrate (cracked concrete, crumbling surface, hollow-sounding areas)

  • the intended use (pedestrian traffic, wet area, main entrance, heavy foot traffic)

  • site constraints (slope, drainage, sun exposure, salt)

MarTex (acrylic coating)

MarTex is a well-known acrylic coating used to achieve a uniform, attractive, slip-resistant finish on pedestrian surfaces.

Common applications:

  • steps and front porches

  • walkways

  • concrete landings and slabs

Key benefits:

  • clean, consistent finish

  • color and texture options

  • slip-resistant surface

  • easy maintenance

Texnov (coating and finishing systems) (96 colors)

Texnov is often chosen when you want a robust solution that matches Quebec outdoor conditions. Depending on the system selected, the goal is a durable, stable finish for traffic areas.

Common applications:

  • outdoor concrete surfaces

  • high-traffic areas that require a more resistant finish

Adex (technical coating and finishing systems)

Adex offers coating and finishing systems used in situations where adhesion, surface preparation, and layer compatibility are critical. It’s a strong option when you need to control overall system performance (substrate, primer, base coats, finish).

Common applications:

  • projects where surface prep and layer build-up are decisive

  • surfaces that require a complete system (depending on the condition of the substrate)

How do I choose an acrylic floor coating for my patio in Montreal?

To choose the right acrylic coating in Montreal, you should validate:

  • Freeze-thaw and moisture resistance: The product must be suited to temperature swings and wet periods. A poorly matched system can stain, delaminate, or wear out prematurely.

  • Slip resistance: On a patio, porch, or steps, a slip-resistant texture is essential—especially after rain or in spring.

  • Ease of maintenance: A good coating should be easy to clean and maintain. Regular upkeep extends its lifespan and keeps it looking great.

  • Aesthetics: Choose a color and texture that complement the façade, steps, landscaping, and surrounding environment.

  • Surface preparation: Durability depends more on preparation than on the product itself. Weak areas must be repaired, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned, and an adequate bonding profile must be created.

  • Slope and drainage management: Standing water damages coatings. You need effective water evacuation and slope correction when required.

  • Professional application: Drying times, weather conditions, and layer thickness must be respected. Professional application greatly reduces the risk of defects.

Key steps for a long-lasting application

  1. Substrate assessmentWe check for cracks, overall soundness, hollow-sounding areas, moisture, and stability. If the substrate is moving, a coating won’t solve the problem long-term.

  2. Slope and drainage validationWe confirm the drainage direction and correct it if needed. This is a critical factor for durability.

  3. Surface preparation

  4. deep cleaning

  5. degreasing if necessary

  6. repairing cracks and defects

  7. creating the right bonding profile

  8. Layer-by-layer application and respecting drying timesWeather conditions (rain, humidity, temperature) directly affect the result. We respect drying times between coats to avoid marks, bubbles, or adhesion issues.

  9. Final inspection and maintenance recommendationsWe verify the finish and provide simple guidelines to preserve the surface.

Warranty

For this service, our warranty is 5 years, under normal use conditions and with recommended maintenance.

Maintenance and best practices

  • regular sweeping and gentle cleaning

  • avoid harsh, non-recommended products

  • limit the use of de-icing salt when possible

  • avoid rubber mats

  • act quickly if an area starts to deteriorate

Why hire a specialist?

A specialized coating isn’t just about looks. Durability depends on surface preparation, product compatibility, drainage, and application conditions. A specialist can recommend the most durable system for your surface, usage, and budget.
